Chapter Six

Hearing the beep of his cell phone-cum-alarm clock, Milo groaned. Hearing Jaime’s grumble, Milo fished for his phone underneath the pillow to turn his alarm off. He squinted at the bright screen. Milo wasn’t surprised to see more texts from Darren, asking progress about his assignment. Milo ignored them. The clock read seven. Milo nudged away Jaime’s arm, although he was reluctant to part from the werewolf. Jaime made such an excellent pillow it was a shame to leave early.

Still, Darren’s text turned from polite inquiries to threats in the space of three days. Milo didn’t blame his boss. He’d fire his sorry ass, too, given he’d disregarded his professionalism over the short time he’d spent in Blue Moon. Since the attack in the public toilet, Jaime had begun hovering close by, acting overprotective. Normally that would annoy Milo, but he started getting used to Jaime so much, Milo missed Jaime when Jaime wasn’t around.

The implications of his actions frightened Milo. Caring and developing emotional attachments to another man, especially a werewolf he intended to dig information out of, wouldn’t bode well for either Jaime or him. For one, Jaime remained tight-lipped as ever, and Milo no longer started to care.

Rubbing at his eyes, Milo slipped out of bed and gave Jaime a kiss on the cheek before padding out the living room. He made coffee, bleary-eyed. Once he had a steaming mug in his hand, he settled on the couch and fired up his laptop. Useless notes remained scattered on his desktop, along with a rough draft at zero words. Darren expected him to dig up something juicy, not convey the truth.

What was the truth exactly? The werewolves of Blue Moon lived normal lives like everyone else on the planet. The same went for the other paranormal denizens. There was nothing here. Milo clicked open his e-mail, sipping his coffee.

More e-mails from Darren. Those he ignored, frowning at one message from an anonymous sender. Milo was tempted to throw that message into the trash folder, but he hesitated, clicking it open despite himself. Curiosity killed the cat they said, and Milo hadn’t used up all his lives.

He sucked a breath. There was a single link inside the message. Spam. He should toss right into the bin, but Milo clicked it open and it led to a shared folder.

“Download files?” Milo muttered.

Despite knowing he’d regret it, he clicked it anyway. Inside the unzipped folder was a gift or curse, depending on how one looked at it. Milo assumed it was the former and he was right as he scrolled through the notes and photos.

Normally, Milo would consider any information gossip without proof, but whoever sent him these files had been thorough. There were files on Horatio, Jaime’s precious Beta, and police files on Horatio’s human, ex-prostitute mate. Even some info on Hayden, the pack Alpha, and how he’d murdered three other shifters to keep his pregnant mate. There were more files marked “dangerous” by the mysterious sender and those included Gerald and Jeremy’s names, the two shifters who assaulted him back at the diner bathroom.
